If you are considering a career in private security, Ireland offers excellent opportunities across areas such as guarding, event security, mobile patrols, and more. However, before applying for our vacant positions, it’s important to understand the requirements to work within security industry in Ireland. From mandatory training to licensing and background checks, here’s everything you need to know.

Do I need security guard training in Ireland?

Yes. To work in the Irish security industry, you must complete a recognised Static Guarding Skills course (QQI Level 4). A QQI Level 4 course consists of 100 hours of learning. It equips learners with the skills, knowledge, and theoretical understanding needed to prepare them for work as a security guard.

Successfully completing the relevant qualification is the first step towards applying for your Private Security Authority (PSA) licence, which is a legal requirement for all security roles in Ireland.

    What is the PSA Licence?

The Private Security Authority (PSA) is the official body that regulates the security industry. Holding a PSA licence in Ireland is a legal requirement for anyone working as a security guard.

To qualify for a licence, you must:

    • Complete the approved training
    • Pass background vetting and screening checks
    • Prove your legal right to work in Ireland

Working without a PSA licence is against the law.

Do I need to be a resident of Ireland?

You do not have to be an Irish citizen or permanent resident to work in security, but you must legally live and work in Ireland. Proof of residency and eligibility to work is required both for employment and when applying for your PSA licence. A valid Personal Public Service (PPS) number is also required.

Do I need a work permit for security jobs in Ireland if I’m from outside the EU?

Yes. If you are from outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you must already have a valid employment permit or immigration status that allows you to work in Ireland. The Irish security industry cannot hire candidates without this.

Screening process - Last 5 years of history

As part of the application process, all candidates must go through a 5-year background screening. This includes:

    • Verification of employment, education, and references for the last five years
    • Checks on any periods of unemployment during the last five years
    • Criminal record vetting where required

This process ensures that only trustworthy and reliable individuals are licensed to work in the security sector.
